Smoke, 1967, by Tony Smith. This huge installation, in the Ahamson building at LACMA, is both compelling and disturbing to me. The blank, cavernous white walls have always felt sterile to me, combined with the stark black of Smoke make this less awe-inspiring and more cold and disturbing to me. It’s interesting how the entire piece seems to lean as well, perhaps to mimic how smoke behaves, but for me, the composition feels a bit out of balance. (Taken with instagram)
